From being a medium fast bowler whose adept lied in swinging the ball both ways to becoming the most potent death bowlers in the world currently, India’s premier fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s journey has been fascinating.

Since making his debut for India back in 2012, Bhuvi was categorised along the lines of his UP teammate Praveen Kumar. The cricketing fraternity had the notion of the bowler being ineffective during the death. So much so that there have been occasions when he bowled out the majority of the quota of his overs with the new ball.

But it all changed during the IPL season of 2016, where we saw him bowl at express pace and yorkers with deadly accuracy. Slowly and steadily, through impressive performances, in tandem with Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvi went on to become the spearhead of India as far as pace bowling is concerned.

The UP-lad now has both movement with the new ball and adept at the death due to his accuracy and control. In the recent times, we have seen a new weapon in his arsenal by the name of knuckle ball, where he delivers the ball with the help of his knuckles behind it, which has already bamboozled many batters. Zaheer Khan was the master of delivering the knuckle ball.

Developed knuckle ball during Test matches prior to IPL: Bhuvi

In the 2nd ODI, Bhuvi was sensational yet again as he broke the back of New Zealand batting with figures of 3/45. His partner in crime, Jasprit Bumrah enquired about the latest addition to his arsenal after he dismissed Munro with the knuckle ball.

“I developed the knuckle ball just before the IPL, during Test matches. Keeping in mind that the ball does not swing much in India and you have (only) two fielders in catching (positions), I tried to develop that variation. I did not know that will come in handy during ODIs and T20Is,” replied Bhuvneshwar Kumar according to the video released by BCCI.
