England vs Australia, 2020: 3rd T20I – Australia’s rare win in England, Hazlewood's return to T20Is and more stats

Australia retained their No.1 team ranking in T20I format as they sneaked in a consolation win in the 3rd T20I game. Jonny Bairstow smashed three sixes and three fours during his 44-ball 55 while England crawled to 145/6 on a slower track. Moeen Ali captained the home team for this game in the absence of Eoin Morgan. The total was too less for the Australians who chased it down with help of Aaron Finch’s 39 off 26 and Mitchell Marsh’s unbeaten 36-ball 39.

Australia’s rare win in England:

1 – Australia’s 5-wicket win is their first T20I victory on England soil while chasing a target. The Aussies lost each of their previous seven T20Is in England while chasing. Overall, this was only the 2nd T20I win for Australia in England out of the 13 T20Is they played.

A rare successful chase against England:

2018 – The last instance of a team winning a T20I match against England while chasing a target was back in July 2018 by India during the Bristol T20I. Since then, England batted first on six instances before Tuesday’s T20I and managed to defend a total five times while another game ended without a result.

Rashid’s efforts in vain:

3/21 – Adil Rashid’s bowling figures of 3/21 are now the best by a spinner for England in a home T20I in Men’s cricket. The previous best bowling figures in a home T20I for an England spinner were 3/25 also by Adil Rashid against West Indies during the 2017 Chester-le-Street T20I.

3/21 – Adil Rashid’s 3/21 are also the 2nd best bowling figures in a home defeat for England in Men’s T20I cricket. The best figures were recorded by Paul Collingwood who took 4/22 against Sri Lanka in 2006 also during the game which was also hosted by Southampton.

England gets a new T20I skipper:

10 – Moeen Ali became the 10th captain of the England team in Men’s T20I cricket. Only South Africa (11) and West Indies (11) had more skippers in the T20I format than England while Australia and Sri Lanka also had ten captains. Seven out of ten England captains including Moeen began their T20I captaincy career with a defeat.

A rare big knock while chasing for Australia:

39* – Mitchell Marsh’s unbeaten 39-run knock is now the 2nd highest score for Australia in a Men’s T20I chase in the last ten years while batting at No.6 or lower. Cameron White scored an unbeaten 41 against South Africa at No.6 during the 2014 Sydney T20I.

Hazlewood’s return to T20Is:

2016 – Josh Hazlewood played his first T20I match since being part of the 2016 WT20 game against India. In these four and half years, Hazlewood missed out on 39 T20I matches played by Australia.

Hazlewood has played only eight matches across seven years in T20I format out of which two were in England. The Aussies won only two T20Is on England soil and both being the only two T20Is that Hazlewood played in England.
