In terms of a cricketing nation, Sri Lanka has been sailing in rough waters for quite some time now. Issues of player injuries, coaching staff reshuffle and the resignation of top selection committee members has wreaked havoc within the workings of the team. According to reports by Cricket Age, no official confirmation has been made by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on the appointment of former Lankan pacer, Graeme Labrooy as the next Chief Selector.

The Lankan team has had to come to terms with the dreaded transition period after several senior players of the team such as Kumar Sangakkara, Tillekeratne Dilshan, and Mahela Jayawardene chose to hang up their boots. Their recent 9-0 whitewash at home against India across formats has only added to their existing woes. Their upcoming tour will see Sri Lanka travel to UAE for three Tests, five ODIs, and three T20Is against Pakistan later this month.

No certainty about Labrooy’s appointment

As per the reports, the new set of selectors will be announced on 18th September. However, no decision has been taken as of yet on the matter of Labrooy acting as the next Chief Selector. A top official in the SLC has said: “The new Selection Committee will be decided and announced on the 18th September 2017, and will announce the Test Squad for the tour against Pakistan on the 20th September 2017.” Elaborating on Labrooy, the same official commented, “He was one of about 15 of those

Elaborating on Labrooy, the same official commented, “He was one of about 15 of those approached but has not given a word yet, a decision will be made after the 15th meeting.”

Earlier, it had been reported that Graeme Labrooy could be a candidate for the post of Sri Lanka’s new Chairman of the Selection Committee; a post which had been previously occupied by Sanath Jayasuriya. Lately, the Lankan team has been reeling under the burden of injuries of multiple players as well as unstable captaincy, with 5 players having led the team in the series against India.
