St Kitts and Nevis Patriots’ batter Evin Lewis went down the memory lane to an incident when Kieron Pollard, inadvertently, bowled a no-ball and denied him a century in the 2017 edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The incident took place during the game between the Patriots and the Barbados Tridents, now Royals, at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.

With the Patriots needing one run to win, Tridents’ skipper Pollard overstepped the bowling crease, leaving Lewis stranded on a 32-ball 97. The Patriots chased the target of 129 in seven overs and won the match by 10 wickets. However, it was Lewis, who was unlucky to not have gotten to his century. Four years down the line, the left-handed batter has made amends.

During the game between Trinbago Knight Riders and the Patriots at the Warner Park in St Kitts, Lewis smashed an unbeaten 52-ball 102 with the help of five fours and 11 sixes. His knock helped the Patriots track down 160 with 32 deliveries to spare. This time around, Pollard was the captain of the Knight Riders. Lewis also smashed Pollard for two sixes down the ground.

It was a lot of hard work and sacrifice, says Evin Lewis

After playing the match-winning hand, Lewis breathed a sigh of relief. The southpaw was happy to have scored handsomely against the in-form Knight Riders’ bowling unit.

“It was a lot of hard work, lot of sacrifice and finally I did it. I still have it in mind (about Pollard denying him a century in CPL in an earlier season) and wanted to do well against TKR.

“We lost the last three games and we wanted to show that we are here to stay,” Lewis said after the match, Cricbuzz reported.

Lewis also drew praises from Pollard, who reckoned that the opener didn’t give TKR a chance to make a comeback. “He (Lewis) batted brilliantly and took the game from us,” Pollard was quoted as saying after TKR’s loss.

The Patriots won their penultimate league game in CPL 2021 by eight wickets and reclaimed their top spot in the points table. The Knights, meanwhile, got pushed down to second in the table.
