The International Cricket Council (ICC) will be conducting the elections for new Chairman in December. It was previously decided that the election will be held in May-June this year, but after a series of meetings that were held in Dubai this week, the election has been postponed.

The news has come in good faith for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as they had plans to pitch in a candidate for the position that will be vacant in December. The current ICC Chair Greg Barclay has been requested by the members to complete his two-year term, which will end in December.

“It has not exactly been postponed, Mr Barclay will continue to be on the Chair as the ICC Board wants him to complete his full term which is the end of the year,” confirmed multiple sources in the ICC as well as the BCCI, as per a report by Cricbuzz.

Had there been an election in May-June, the newly appointed chairperson would have taken the role in July at the ICC Annual Conference. When the talks about holding the elections in May-June were ongoing, there was uncertainty about the end date of Barclay’s term.

BCCI likely to pitch Anurag Thakur’s name for the role

This postponement works in favour of the BCCI, as the board was keen on fielding one of their top candidates for the position. Things will be much clearer in October, as there will be clarity on who all will continue to bear their position at the BCCI.

It was also reported that the BCCI might pitch for former president Anurag Thakur for the role. He has also been the director of the ICC in the past. The members of the BCCI feel that the final decision should come in India’s favor as the 2023 World Cup is set to be hosted by the country.
