Paying respects to the legendary freedom fighters of both countries, the Test series between India and South Africa has been named “Freedom Series”. Indians will be traveling to the Safari Lands for a full-fledged tour, which includes 3 Tests, 6 ODIs, and 3 T20Is. In an official statement released by Cricket South Africa, they suggested it was the best name they could’ve thought of.

India and South Africa’s struggle for freedom had many similarities. Nelson Mandela, the first ever President of Independent South Africa in 1994, had similar ideologies as that of the father of India, Mahatma Gandhi. Mandela had immense respect in India and is the only foreigner in the history to win the country’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna.

Both countries achieved freedom through non-violence

Paying tribute to both the national icons, CSA’s official statement mentioned that both country fought against a same enemy and India had always been one of the principal opponents of aparthied. Both these cricket loving contries had so much in common and the amount of mutual respect these people have has always been palpable.

“India had been among the principal opponents of apartheid. The Freedom Series was felt by both nations to be a more fitting name in recognition of South Africa’s and India’s shared history of winning freedom through non-violence, not to mention their shared love of cricket!” said a media release issued by Cricket South Africa.

The Test series against the Proteas is set to commence on January 5th, which means it’ll be the first assignment for the Indian side in 2018. The last two Tests are scheduled to be played at Centurion (from January 13) and Johannesburg (from January 24). Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who is currently on a personal leave, will be joining the Indian side directly in the tour and he will be accompanied by his wife Anushka Sharma.
