Dinesh Karthik concluded the Nidahas Trophy in a way that resonates the ‘stuff of dreams’ so to speak. During that time, the Indian wicketkeeper-batsman was named as the skipper of the Kolkata Knight Riders, something that came as a shock to those who questioned his expensive price-tag as well. Having been captained by Gautam Gambhir in the past, the 32-year old will certainly have his task cut out. Speaking about it ahead of their first encounter against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Karthik sounded confident.

However, one of the few questions he was asked was about India U19 player Shubman Gill who was snapped up by the Kolkata-based franchise. In fact, they picked up Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti from the Colts’ side as well, something that reinforces their trust in youth. Karthik sounded the same no less.

‘Look, it’s very hard to exactly say when he’s gonna be playing or when he’ll make his debut. But I’ve heard good things about him and he looks a quality player, I believe we played a match together and he played some really lovely shots and I’m sure he’ll be playing this year at some point of time. I wish him all the best. Like everybody else in the team, everybody stands a chance and he’s like anybody else. As we get closer to the game, we’ll take a decision as to whether he’ll be playing or not.

Not trying to be Gambhir but know what is expected of me

Although he did add that the aura of Gautam Gambhir may loom large on the side, he has said that there will be pressure, but he is at a stage where he can handle the pressure.

‘Let’s be honest, what Gautam Gambhir has achieved in the last seven years is phenomenal. He’s kind of left a benchmark where almost every year they’ve qualified at a bare minimum. Being the leader of the team, that’s what the management and everybody else will expect from me. So, I’m kind of aware of the expectations that exist. Will that be a pressure? Yes, as a captain, you know, if you’re expected to achieve to go through to the playoffs, that is the least anybody can expect. So yes, there will be pressure but I think, I’m at a stage where I can handle it and get the best out of my team.’
