An in-form Rajasthan Royals, having won both their opening games, locked horns with Kolkata Knight Riders in the 12th match of IPL 2020. The Steve Smith-led side, eyeing for a hat-trick after winning both their opening games, put KKR to bat first at Dubai International Stadium.

However, the decision proved costly for RR as they failed to hunt down a testing 174-run total in the second innings. KKR, meanwhile, delivered an impressive bowling performance to defeat RR by 37 runs and pocket their second victory of IPL 2020.

The match started with Royals’ kicking off their bowling expedition with Jofra Archer’s blistering pace. The speedster ticked 150 kmph on almost every delivery and made life tough for KKR’s opening duo of Sunil Narine and Shubman Gill.

It was eventually Jaydev Unadkat who provided RR with the first breakthrough, scattering Narine’s defence through a slower delivery. Nitish Raina, after his 17-ball 22 cameo, was also shown the exit door by man-of-the-moment Rahul Tewatia.

Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti scalped two wickets each

But Gill, carrying his stellar form, scored a 34-ball 47 to maintain a healthy run rate. However, he failed to convert it into a big score after getting a top edge off Archer’s high-speed delivery. Archer, with his lethal spell, struck again in his subsequent over by plucking the wicket of KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik.

After Archer’s show, Ankit Rajpoot registered his name in the wicket-takers after scalping wicket of a dangerous-looking Andre Russell to leave KKR reeling at 115/5. Eoin Morgan, living up to the expectations, amassed a much-needed 23-ball 34 and stayed unbeaten till the end as KKR put up a challenging 174-run total on the scoreboard.

In response, Royals’ batting unit, on the contrary, suffered a debacle. The RR run-chase was jolted with two major blows as the in-form duo of skipper Smith and Sanju Samson was sent back to the pavilion. Wickets kept tumbling at a consistent rate as Jos Buttler, Robin Uthappa, Riyan Parag and Rahul Tewatia were also dismissed cheaply. With the scoreboard reflecting 66/6, the possibility of RR clinching the encounter was looking bleak.

The young KKR duo of Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti wreaked havoc and scalped early wickets to put their side in the driving seat. Tom Curran, did enthral RR fans with some late fireworks but it wasn’t enough to guide his side past the finishing line. Curran smoked 54 off 36 deliveries as RR managed to post only 137 runs on the board to hand KKR their second victory of the tournament.
