The Indian Premier League (IPL), which was inaugurated in the year 2008, has brought many transformations to the sport and has travelled all across the globe. It is watched by millions of sports fanatics each year. The IPL is set to step into its 15th edition in 2022 and a few changes are likely to be implemented this season.
The players, all over the world, are keen to perform well this year in their national and domestic campaigns in order to feature in the cash-rich tournament. The IPL has brought many cricketers to the limelight and has transformed their life throughout. One main factor which attracts the players to play this league is their exposure and also the salary cap which it provides.
It is very tough for the players to represent an IPL team and it is more difficult to perform well consistently and to sustain in that spot. Some players became rich overnight and couldn’t perform to their price tag.
In the article, let’s take a look at the players whose auction price might come down after an average previous season:
1. Chris Morris
Chris Morris, the most expensive player in the history of IPL, represented Rajasthan Royals in 2021. He was purchased for an immoderate price of INR 16.25 crores in the auction of the 14th IPL season. He was thought to be overpriced for his performance.
The Proteas all-rounder has been playing the IPL since 2013 and has played 81 matches. After being left out for the auction by Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2020, he was signed by the Rajasthan Royals.
In 2021’s IPL, he played 11 matches and took 15 wickets but his economy of 9.17 was huge. He didn’t bat much except his 36* off 18 balls against Delhi Capitals. He didn’t prove to be worthy of his price tag and might not earn this huge in the upcoming seasons of IPL.
2. Dinesh Karthik
The versatile wicket-keeping batter Dinesh Karthik is a renowned IPL cricketer. He is one of the players to play most of the matches since the inaugural edition. He has represented six IPL teams starting from Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Lions, and finally Kolkata Knight Riders.
On playing 213 matches he has scored 4046 runs with an average and strike rate of 25.77 and 129.72 respectively. He was picked by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018’s season for a massive price of INR 7.4 crores and was given the captaincy.
In 2021, he played 17 matches and hit 223 runs with a low average of 22.30. He has not always been a star player for a franchise and due to his deteriorating performances, he might not be auctioned for a price as his previous one.
3. Kyle Jamieson
Kyle Jamieson, the tall Kiwi all-rounder, after making an exciting international debut in a Test match against India, attracted the IPL franchises. He is known for the pace and bounces that he offers. With his confident performance at the highest level, he entered the auction pool at a base price of INR 75 lakhs.
Royal Challengers Bangalore were looking for a swift pace bowler that season. He was deemed to be the right man on their side and was snatched for an extortionate amount of INR 15 crores. This was the second most expensive buy of the 2021’s auction and the third most expensive player since the beginning.
Being his debut season in the most-watched cricket league with his burden of heavy price-tag, he was not able to perform worth his penny. In nine matches, he took just nine wickets with an expensive economy of 9.60. His T20I records are not in his favour too and he might not get an amount anyway near the previous year.
4. Manish Pandey
Manish Pandey, a well-known face in the Indian Premier League, will not be retained most probably by the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise for the upcoming seasons. He has been playing this league since 2008 and he was the first Indian to hit a century in the IPL.
He is a flamboyant right-handed-top-order batter and has been representing the Sunrisers Hyderabad since 2018. He was bought for a price of INR 11 crores and has had a decent run over the years. In 2021, he was given a chance in playing eleven only for eight matches.
His strike rate of 121.83 and his consistency with the bat was a big question mark. He was made to warm the bench in many matches despite being bought for a huge price. This 32-year-old player is surely not in his prime and might not attract expensive bids.
5. Jhye Richardson
Jhye Richardson is a right-arm fast bowler who could swing the ball at consistent speeds of over 140kmph. He had a successful campaign in the Big Bash League season-10 in which he bowled in 17 matches and took 29 wickets with an economy of 7.69. These figures attracted the IPL franchises and he was picked for a whopping INR 14 crores by the Punjab Kings in 2021.
It became the fourth expensive buy of that year’s auction. He played only three matches in the IPL and he picked just three wickets with his economy of 10.63 being too high. He failed to justify his price tag and hence was made to warm the bench. This is a highly competitive tournament and he flunked to trouble the batters.
This 25-year-old youngster was dropped from the Australian T20 World Cup squad too. He suddenly rose to the peak after the auction and dropped even more swiftly after his bad performances. He might not be picked for an expensive amount unless he proves his worth in the subcontinent conditions.
