The Day 2 of the IPL 2022 mega auction saw some smart and interesting buys as all the 10 participating teams looked to make the most of their opportunities in building their final squad. However, there was also one player who was successfully sold but, had to take a massive pay cut from what he had received last year. He was none other than senior Indian uncapped player Krishnappa Gowtham. He was roped in by the new entrants Lucknow Super Giants for INR 90 lakh.

The 33-year-old had made it to the IPL 2022 mega auction at a base price of INR 50 lakh as a few teams including the likes of the two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders and the 2020 finalists Delhi Capitals entered the bidding war only to back out when the bidding price started going up. The Lucknow-based franchise completed the formalities by bringing him on board for the 15th edition of the marquee tournament.

IPL 2022: Krishnappa Gowtham gets a massive salary cut at the mega auction

After Gowtham was sold to Lucknow at INR 90 lakh to be a part of the IPL 2022, his price value dropped drastically compared to the fortune he had made last year while representing the four-time winners Chennai Super Kings. CSK had roped in the Karnataka cricketer at the IPL 2021 mini-auction for a staggering INR 9.25 crore as he became the most expensive uncapped player ever in the cash-rich tournament.

Nonetheless, the Bengaluru spinner did not feature in a single match for the Chennai-based franchise last season in their title-winning campaign. He was not in the team’s scheme of things when they made their mandatory retentions for IPL 2022 on November 30, 2021.

Krishnappa Gowtham has the experience of playing in three IPL seasons. He had first made his presence felt for the inaugural edition’s winners Rajasthan Royals in 2018 where he picked up 11 wickets in 15 matches. Gowtham didn’t have a great IPL in the next two seasons for RR managing just a scalp each as they released him. The 33-year-old has so far played 24 matches and registered 13 scalps.
