The Mumbai Indians beat in-form Rajasthan Royals by five wickets in Match 44 of IPL 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on April 30. By virtue of this win, the five-time champions finally managed to add two points to their tally after eight straight losses.

The coin landed in the favour of MI skipper Rohit Sharma and he elected to bowl. The move was spot on as the Mumbai bowlers kept adding pressure on the famed RR batting line-up as they could not offer much resistance. Jos Buttler’s one-man show helped them in posting a respectable total of 158/6. He scored 67 runs from 52 deliveries.

Tim David finishes for MI in style

In reply, Mumbai lost captain Rohit early and Ishan Kishan did not last for too long either. Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma carried out the rescue act with an 81-run stand for the third wicket. While Yadav scored 51 runs off 39 deliveries, Varma contributed with a 30-ball 35 before both were dismissed in quick succession.

Nonetheless, Tim David, who played his third game for MI, held on to his nerves and successfully helped the five-time winners get past the finish line with four balls to spare. He remained unbeaten on a nine-ball 20.

Losing skipper, Sanju Samson said:

“We could have scored a few more runs. Dew came in and it was tough to bowl as the ball was getting wet. We changed the ball as it was getting really wet. Different venues are playing in different ways. Batting first here was tough as it was two-paced. Few more runs with the bat would have helped.”

Winning skipper, Rohit Sharma said:

“I’d definitely take it, that’s how we play, real potential came out today, with the ball specially. They kept applying the pressure. If you keep taking wickets, it’s going to be difficult for them, we did that perfectly today. This is the team we played in the first couple of games except few bowling changes. When you have a season like that, you are not sure of your combination. You want to try out so many things. The conditions are different. The ball tends to grip here, the pitches are flat in the other venues. We try and field the best combination, it hasn’t worked for eight games. But one thing I can say is, we were not blown away by the opposition, we came really close. Had we won those games, things would have been slightly different. Both of these guys, they are courageous, they want to do something special. It gives me the confidence to bowl them at any given stage. We played very well, bowlers came together, batters did the job as well.”

Player of the Match, Suryakumar Yadav said:

“It was really important for me to play till the end, but my job at No. 3 was to take the game ahead from where Rohit left. Nevertheless, very happy with the way things went. It was an important win to have a good atmosphere. Really looking forward to the few games ahead. I have enjoyed batting at all positions, but I love batting at No. 3 because I can pace my innings accordingly and take the game ahead. I am really flexible. (This win) Spreads a loads of positivity, even in the practice session, we are enjoying each others’ company.”
