The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bossed over the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) side in the 35th match of IPL 2021. The MS Dhoni-led outfit produced a clinical performance with both bat and ball, to comfortably beat the Virat Kohli-led outfit with 6 wickets to spare.

The Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) openers, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis provided an excellent start for the ‘Men in Yellow’. The duo put on a 71-run partnership for the opening wicket off 8.2 overs. But then, both batsmen were removed in the space of 5 balls. Virat Kohli’s brilliance on the field brought an end to Gaikwad’s stay out in the middle.

To a flighted delivery from Chahal, Gaikwad went for the drive and the ball took the outside edge of his bat. Kohli, who was stationed at point, dived full length and plucked the ball just inches from the ground. Du Plessis was the next man to depart and hit Glenn Maxwell straight to the fielder at short fine leg.

Moeen Ali then scored a breezy 18-ball 23, but just when he was looking good, he was removed by Harshal Patel. Ambati Rayudu was the next man to depart. The right-hander pulled Harshal Patel straight to AB de Villiers, who was stationed at short mid-wicket, and walked back for a well-made 32.

However, MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina finished the job for the Chennai side. While Raina scored a quickfire 10-ball 17*, Dhoni remained unbeaten on 11. For the RCB side, Harshal Patel was the pick of the bowlers. The right-arm pacer scalped 2 wickets in the 3.1 overs that he bowled, and leaked 25 runs.

RCB fizzle out after 111-run opening stand between Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) openers, Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal started the innings in rousing fashion. Kohli was striking the ball well and scored 6 fours and a six in his 41-ball stay out in the middle. The RCB skipper helped himself to 53. The highlight of Kohli’s innings was a no-look shot that he played off the bowling of Shardul Thakur.

Devdutt Padikkal matched his captain stroke-for-stroke and scored a classy 70 at a strike rate of 140. And, the two batsmen put on a 111-run opening stand off 13.2 overs. But then, the other RCB batsmen failed to capitalize on the start provided by Kohli and Padikkal. The overseas duo of AB de Villiers and Glenn Maxwell failed to get going for the second match in a row. While de Villiers was dismissed for 12, Maxwell scored a 9-ball 11.

And in the end, the RCB side could only post a total of 156/6 on the board on a ground where the boundaries are extremely short. On the bowling front, Dwayne Bravo was superb with the ball for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The wily CSK veteran bowled 4 overs, gave away just 24 runs, and picked up 3 wickets. Shardul Thakur chipped in with a couple of wickets as well.

And with this dominating victory, the Chennai Super Kings have moved to the top spot in the IPL points table, while the Royal Challengers Bangalore outfit is occupying the third place.
