Earlier this year, Kevin Pietersen turned heads in his first outing with the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, mostly due to his unique bat. He took to the field using this special bat with Rhino stickers on the back and front of the bat in order to raise awareness against the poaching of rhinos that is one of the most endangered species in the world.

Born in South Africa, Pietersen has been actively campaigning for various measures to preserve wildlife in his native country, especially Rhinos. His involvement with South African wicketkeeper Mark Boucher’s Legacy Charity “Rhino in Safe Hands” proves that he has used his influential status to good effect.

Speaking to the Herald Sun, Pietersen had earlier revealed how the campaign to save rhinos from extinction is very close to his heart. “It’s a huge, huge passion and desire of mine to raise as much awareness as possible so that this stops,” he said. “I’m a South African and I love animals. I’ve always been on safari and if I wasn’t a cricketer I’d be in the bush. I want my kids’ kids to be able to have the luxury of seeing rhinos in their natural environment.”

He had previously also shared a post on Twitter showing his support for the cause and also emphasised that it would form part of his New Year resolution too.

Presently, he is looking for sponsors for his special bat, making it clear that the entire money would go to the cause. He tweeted, “Would any company or individual like to sponsor my rhino bat for my T20 season for Surrey? 100% of the money will go to rhinos…”

KP will play county cricket for the first time in two years next summer after agreeing on a deal to return to Surrey following his final sacking in 2015. Pietersen will play for Surrey in the Natwest Blast competition after he decided to pull out of the Caribbean Premier League because he wanted to stay close to home and particularly because he did not enjoy the experience at the Carribean tournament last year.

Pietersen’s first game for Surrey will be against Essex on July 19 and he will be available for the rest of the competition.
