Former Australian cricketer turned commentator, brother of Steve Waugh, Mark Waugh has called India selfish for not playing pink-ball Test match, after the BCCI refused to play a day/night fixture against Australia on the tour of Australia later this year. It was reported that the members of the Indian team were not too keen on playing the pink-ball Test.

Bangladesh, Ireland and India are three nations who are yet to play with a pink ball. India was offered to play this format before too, but things did not materialize. This has led to Waugh calling them selfish, who feels that pink-ball is a great way to revitalise the slow death of Test cricket in an age where the shorter formats get most views.

“It’s a little bit selfish from India’s point of view because we need to revitalise Test cricket,” he said on Big Sports Breakfast radio on Wednesday.

“Day-night Test cricket in some countries is going to be one of those ingredients that could transform Test cricket back to where it should be. Their team is pretty well suited to day-night cricket, they’ve got a string of fast bowlers, so they don’t just rely on the spinners, and their batsmen are technically very good as well. So for the greater good of the game, I would have loved to have seen that as a day-night Test,” he added.

Australia have won all their games under floodlights

Some also feel that India’s refusal to play a day and night Test is because they are scared they might not register a whitewash over Australia, given that the hosts have won all their pink-ball Tests so far and have looked dominant. Australia has won all four pink-ball Tests they played, starting with the game against New Zealand in 2015. Their good records under floodlights might have prompted India to not play with the pink ball against them.
