Rajasthan Royals thumped the Sunrisers Hyderabad by 61 runs in their opening game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Tuesday (March 29). Chasing a mammoth target of 211 runs, SRH could only score 149 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their 20 overs. Rather they were in such a poor position that their final score is also a huge one given that they were 37/5 in the 11th over of their innings.
It all started with their skipper Kane Williamson getting out controversially off Prasidh Krishna who was making the ball talk, generating extra bounce and movement off the pitch. He and Trent Boult didn’t concede a single boundary off the bat in the first 4.5 overs. When Boult pinned Nicholas Pooran in front of the stumps, SRH’s score read a mediocre 9/3.
There was no let-off at any stage in the first six overs from the Royals’ bowlers as the Sunrisers could only muster 14 runs in the powerplay. They recorded the joint-lowest powerplay score ever in the history of IPL, equalling Rajasthan Royals‘ score of 14/2 back in the 2009 season. The next three low scores are of CSK in the 2011, 2015 and 2019 seasons, respectively.
Markram and Sundar save the day for SRH
Things were so bad for SRH that at one stage, it felt like they would lose by a margin of more than 100 runs. However, Aiden Markram, Romario Shepherd and Washington Sundar made sure that they reached a respectable score by the end of the 20th over. Rather the three batters did extremely well, smashing six maximums and 10 fours between them.
Sundar took the attack to Nathan Coulter-Nile smashing him for 24 runs in a single over, while Markram also showed off his hitting skills and scored a valiant 57* off 41 deliveries. SRH eventually ended at 149 runs for the loss of seven wickets to lose by 61 runs which is still a huge margin in the shortest format, but it could’ve been even worse for them.
Meanwhile, Twitter was not happy with their batting in the powerplay overs, and they roasted the Orange Army for the same reason.
Here’s how Twitter reacted:

SRH should play for a draw here, will give them points in the WTC points table, and strong qualifications chances to playoffs for Kane, the captain.#IPL2022
