Mumbai has been the batting school of India for a long time now. There is always something special and eye-catching with the Mumbai batsmen. The Commercial Capital of India produced many batting greats who went on to make it big at the international level. The great Sachin Tendulkar also hails from Mumbai and needs no introduction. Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane from the current Indian crop hail from Mumbai too.
Mumbai batsmen also have a reputation for playing the long innings and scoring big runs. Prior to the news of Pranav Dhanawde’s 1009 runs has sunk in, there is another young boy from Navi Mumbai who scored over a 1000 runs in a school tournament.
Tanishq Gavate enters into the cricket record books
Tanishq played for Yashwantrao Chavan XI against the Yashwantrao Chavan English Medium School in the Under-14 Navi Mumbai Shield invitational cricket tournament. Gavate remained not out on 1045 runs at the end of his innings. Gavate’s innings came off just 515 balls studded with 149 fours and a mammoth 67 sixes.
Tanishq played this knock over two days – on Monday and Tuesday – at the semi-final of the tournament at the Yashwantrao Chavan English Medium School Ground in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai. As reported by PTI, the match was played on a ground with a leg-side boundary of 60-65 yards while it was 50 yards on the off-side.
The innings brought memories of Dhanawade, who slammed 1,009* in the Bhandari Cup inter-school tournament two years back. The then 15-year-old from Kalyan had broken the record of Arthur Collins, who had smashed 628 in 1899. But if you are wondering if Tanishq broke Pranav’s record, no he didn’t. Unfortunately, Under-14 Navi Mumbai Shield invitational cricket tournament is not recognized by Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).
Gavate’s coach spoke to the Hindustan Times after the innings. He said, “Previously he used to bat at one or two down but he requested me to allow him to open the innings. After testing him in the nets with the new ball and in few practice matches, I was confident that he can do well”.
