India took a 2-0 lead in the five-match ODI series with their biggest ODI victory in New Zealand of 90 runs at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. India, who elected to bat first, had a 154-run opening stand between Rohit Sharma (87) and Shikhar Dhawan (66) but didn’t really accelerate their innings and crawled to 324/4 in their 50 overs. In the big chase, the Indian spinners were all over the hosts once again. Doug Bracewell scored 57 batting at No.8 which helped New Zealand to post at least 234.
All the major stats and numbers recorded during India’s first ever ODI win on their Republic Day:
A collective top-order effort:
1 – For the first time in their ODI history, each of India’s top five scored 40 and more. Overall, this is the 10th instance of top five in the batting order scoring 40 and more in the same ODI innings for any team.
Spinners shine yet again:
5 – Kuldeep Yadav’s 4-wicket haul in this game is his 5th in ODI cricket. All his ODI 4-fers have come outside Asia; the joint-most by an Indian spinner in this format. Anil Kumble also had five 4-wicket hauls outside Asia.
7 – Number of wickets for spinners in this game; the same as the number of wickets they claimed in the first ODI. Never before this series, had Indian spinners bagged as many as seven wickets in an ODI in New Zealand.
14 – Indian spinners picked up 14 wickets in the first two matches of this ODI series; the most by them in an ODI series/tournament in New Zealand. Their previous best was 12 wickets apiece during the 1994 four-match series and in the 2009 five-match ODI series.
Another big stand between Rohit and Dhawan:
14 – Number of century partnerships between Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma in ODI cricket. Only Sachin Tendulkar-Sourav Ganguly pair (26) and Virat Kohli and Rohit pair (15) had more century stands in this format than Dhawan-Rohit pair. The duo went past 14-century partnerships by Sachin and Virender Sehwag.
Yet another big total for India:
56 – Number of times India have crossed 300-run mark outside India in ODI cricket; the joint-most by any team. Australia is the other team to top the list. Pakistan scored 300 in ODIs on 52 instances outside home excluding five instances since 2013 in UAE which are considered to be part of their home games.
324/4 – India’s total of 324/4 in this game is their 2nd highest in the ODI format in New Zealand. Their highest is 392/4 against the hosts in the 2009 Christchurch ODI.
Dhoni shines again:
48* – MS Dhoni’s 48 in this game is his lowest ODI score in 2019 having scored a fifty in each of the three innings during the ODI series in Australia. Dhoni now has a 40+ score in each of his previous seven ODI innings in New Zealand.
10414 – Dhoni went past Brian Lara’s tally of 10405 runs in ODI cricket to become the 11th highest run-getter in this format. During the first ODI, Virat Kohli surpassed Lara’s ODI aggregate.
Rohit levels with Sehwag:
16 – Number of sixes Rohit Sharma has hit in ODI cricket in New Zealand; the joint-most by an Indian in this part of the world. Virender Sehwag also hit 16 sixes in ODIs in New Zealand but played two innings more than Rohit.
Boult joins a rare list:
401 – With the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan, the New Zealand left-arm pacer completed 400 wickets in International cricket. Thus, he became only the 5th player to bag over 400 International wickets for his country. Daniel Vettori, the only spinner among the five, leads the list with 696 wickets.
