New Zealand completed a whitewash in the 3-match ODI series against India as they won the final game of the series with a 5-wicket win. India lost three early wickets after been put to bat. Century stands by KL Rahul (112) with Shreyas Iyer (62) and Manish Pandey (42) powered India to 296/7.

Openers Martin Guptill (66 off 46) and Henry Nicholls (80) scored fifties as the home team cruised in the chase. However, the spinners tried to bring India back into the game but Colin de Grandhomme’s unbeaten 28-ball 58 helped New Zealand finish off the chase with 17 balls to spare.

All the statistical highlights created during New Zealand’s 5-wicket victory against India:

A rare whitewash against India:

1 – The 0-3 series defeat against New Zealand is now the first instance of India getting whitewashed in a 3-match bilateral ODI series. West Indies defeated India by 5-0 margin during the 5-match ODI series in 1982 away series and 1989 home series.

India lost ODI series to South Africa by 0-4 in their 2006-07 South African tour which was in fact during a 5-match series but the first ODI was abandoned even without a toss. India also lost the 1997 ODI series in Sri Lanka by 0-3 margin which was scheduled to be a 3-match series. However, the last ODI won by the Lankans was actually replayed on the reserve day even though 69 overs of play was completed on actual match day.

Another big chase for New Zealand:

297 – New Zealand’s 297-run chase in this game is their 2nd highest ODI chase against India. The 348-run chase in the Hamilton ODI was the highest for Kiwis against India. New Zealand’s highest ODI chase before this series against India was 281 during the 2017 Mumbai ODI.

A record knock from KL Rahul:

2 – KL Rahul’s century in this match is only the 2nd ODI century by an Indian wicketkeeper outside Asia. Rahul Dravid scored 145 against Sri Lanka in the 1999 CWC match in Taunton. It was indecently the first-ever ODI hundred by an Indian keeper-batsman.

List of records KL Rahul created during his maiden ODI century as a wicketkeeper

Quick-fire knock from De Grandhomme:

21 – Colin de Grandhomme’s 21-ball fifty is now the fastest in the ODIs between India and New Zealand. The previous fastest was Rahul Dravid’s 22-ball fifty against the Kiwis during the 2003 ODI Tri-series match in Hyderabad.

The previous fastest ODI fifty for New Zealand against India was recorded by Kyle Mills in 27 balls during the 2009 Christchurch ODI. Martin Guptill scored fifty off 29 balls before Grandhomme which is now the 3rd fastest ODI fifty for New Zealand against India.

Shardul Thakur goes expensive yet again:

1 – Shardul Thakur became the first Indian bowler to concede 80+ runs in multiple games in an ODI series/tournament. Thakur is overall the 6th bowler to give away 80+ runs more than once in a Men’s ODI series/tournament.

Shaheen Shah Afridi conceded 80+ runs on three occasions during the last year’s England series while Shingi Masakadza (vs SA, 2010), Kevin O’Brien (CWC 2015), Kagiso Rabada (vs AUS, 2016) and Andrew Tye (vs ENG, 2018) conceded twice in a series.

227 – Runs conceded by Shardul Thakur in this ODI series; the 3rd most runs conceded by a bowler in a 3-match ODI series. Shingi Masakadza gave away 244 runs in the 2010 series against South Africa while Jasprit Bumrah conceded 228 runs in the 2017 home ODI series against England.

A tough series for Jasprit Burmah:

167 – Runs Jasprit Bumrah conceded in this ODI series; the most runs conceded by an Indian in an ODI series/tournament without taking a wicket. The previous most were 160 runs by Venkatesh Prasad across three matches during the 1997 Independence Cup.

180 – Jasprit Bumrah bowled 10 overs in all the three matches but failed to take a wicket. The 180 balls he bowled in this series are now the most by an Indian bowler without taking a wicket in a bilateral ODI series.

Arshad Ayub in the 1989 home series against West Indies and Murali Kartik in the 2006 away series against South Africa bowled 28 overs apiece (168 balls) without claiming a wicket. Four Indian bowlers bowled more than 30 overs without any success during 1975 and 1979 World Cups.

180 – The 180 balls bowled by Bumrah are also the joint 2nd most by a pacer in a bilateral ODI series without a wicket. Ewen Chatfield bowled 204 balls across 4 matches during the 1988 away series against India while Tinashe Panyangara also bowled 180 balls without a wicket during the 3-match home ODI series against Pakistan in 2013.

Virat Kohli’s worst series as captain:

75 – Virat Kohli’s 75 runs in this series are the fewest by him in an ODI series/tournament as captain. He aggregated only 89 runs during the 3-match home ODI series against West Indies in last December. Kohli scored 100+ runs in all other 19 series/tournaments as captain in the ODI format.

3 – Virat Kohli has failed to score a century in all the three ODI series he played in this ongoing 2019-20 season. The last instance of Kohli failing to score a hundred in three successive ODI series/tournaments was during 2012-2013 period where he missed out on a hundred in 3-match home ODI series against Pakistan, 5-match home ODI series against England and Champions Trophy.

Iyer and Rahul rescue India:

2 – Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul became only the 2nd Indian pair to share two century stands in an ODI series/tournament while batting at No.4 and No.5 positions. Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni put on 100+ partnerships during the 2007 home ODI series against Pakistan.
