Australia looked comfortable after playing out the opening session without losing a wicket before they lost all their ten wickets across 24 overs. Openers Usman Khawaja and Aaron Finch scored 85 and 62 respectively to share a 142-run opening stand. Mohammad Abbas (4/29) broke the partnership by dismissing Finch and ran through the Australian batting along with debutant Bilal Asif who took 6/36 in his 21.3 overs. Pakistan ended the day at 45/3 but still lead by 325 runs.

All the major stats and numbers that were recorded during a day of collapses in Dubai:

3 – This Test match is only the third instance of both the team’s putting on 140+ opening stands in their first innings. The other two were Australia-India Sydney Test in 1986 and India-New Zealand Mohali Test in 2003.

Overall, this is the 7th Test match where both the teams had a 140+ partnership with the last one coming in the New Zealand-England Dunedin Test in 2013.

6/39 – Bilal Asif’s bowling figures of 6/39 are the best for a Pakistan player on his Test debut. Mohammad Zahid took 7/66 in New Zealand’s second innings of the 1996 Rawalpindi Test while Mohammad Nazir registered figures of 7/99 also against New Zealand in the 1969 Karachi Test.

33y 13d – At the age of 33 years and 13 days, Bilal Asif is the oldest Pakistan debutant to take a five-wicket haul on Test debut. Overall, he is the ninth oldest to take a five-fer on Test debut and the oldest since New Zealand’s Fen Cresswell (34y 144d) in the 1949 Test against England at The Oval.

60 – Runs Australia added for losing their last ten wickets after the 142-run opening stand. These are the fewest runs a team added before losing their last ten wickets after a century partnership in a Test inning.

India went down from 124/0 to 170/10 losing their ten wickets for 46 runs in the 1946 Manchester Test against England while in the 1974 Auckland Test, England collapsed from 107/0 to 158/10 adding 51 runs against New Zealand.

62 – Aaron Finch’s 62 is the highest by an Australian opener on his Test debut in Asia. His score of 62 is bettered by only four Australians on their Test debut in Asia while batting in the middle and lower order.

70.3 – Australia’s opening stand accounted for 70.3% of their team total. This is the 5th highest percentage of team’s total made by the opening stand in a Test inning. The highest is 75.62 by the Windies in the 1999 Hamilton Test against New Zealand as they were bowled out for 365 in the first innings of the game after 276-run opening stand.

142 – The 142-run partnership between Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja is Australia’s second-highest opening stand in Asia. Their highest of 176 was recorded by MJ Slater and Mark Taylor pair also against Pakistan in the first innings of the 1994 Rawalpindi Test.
