2019 was a year to remember for Australia fast-bowler Pat Cummins. In a remarkable year for Australia in Tests during which they retained the Ashes before beating Pakistan and New Zealand, Pat Cummins turned out be his team’s most important player. It would not be wrong to say that Cummins was the most impressive pacer in Test cricket last year.
The right-arm pacer finished the year as the highest wicket-taker in the longest format of the game. Cummins finished 2019 with 59 victims in 12 Tests, 14 more than next best, who was his teammate Nathan Lyon who had 45. It was the most prolific year for an Australian fast bowler since Mitchell Johnson took 63 wickets in 13 Tests in 2009.
The year then ended on a stunning note for him as he bagged a lucrative contract from his former Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kolkata Knight Riders. A number of franchises bid fiercely for the Australia pacer before the Knight Riders finally won the race. The two-time champions shelled out a whopping amount of INR 15.5 crores to secure Cummins’ services.
In the process, Cummins, who had a base price of INR 2 crore, became the most expensive overseas player in the history of IPL. He surpassed the previous record of Ben Stokes who was the most expensive player in 2017 IPL auction season. Stokes was bought by Rising Pune Supergiant for Rs 14.5 crore
A memorable start to 2020 for Pat Cummins
The year 2020 has started on a similar note for Pat Cummins. Last month, he was named the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year. The world number one Test bowler was also one of the five Australians who made it to the Test team of the Year. And the ongoing year has only become more memorable for Pat Cummins as he got engaged to his long-time girlfriend Becky Boston.
