The final day of the seventh round in Ranji Trophy saw some fantastic close finishes, vindicating why red ball cricket is still the best form of the game. Hyderabad and Punjab played out a sensational game in the City of Pearls whilst Assam just about edged out Goa in a nerve-wracking contest in Guwahati.

After Akshath Reddy’s heroic 161 helped Hyderabad set a 338-run target for Punjab in 57 overs, Shubman Gill played one of the finest knocks of this season, scoring 148 off just 154 balls. His dismissal came exactly at the wrong time for Punjab, who might’ve cruised through. But eventually, they settled for a draw which gave Hyderabad three points.

Assam were on the back foot when Amit Verma and Lakshay Garg were building a big partnership chasing 218 runs, but Arup Das struck some mighty blows for the bowling side. With just 8 runs to get, Goa lost their final wicket as Arup completed a 6-fer and Assam narrowly picked up a much-needed win.

Karnataka back to winning ways

After a dismal performance against Saurashtra, Karnataka just about squeezed 3 points against Gujarat. They’re now back on winning ways as they annihilated Railways by 176 runs. Chasing 362 runs to win, Railways were bowled out for 185 runs with Krishnappa Gowtham registering figures of 6/30.

Himachal Pradesh needed 111 runs to win with less than 17 overs remaining in the day after Abhinav Mukund and Baba Indrajith’s centuries almost rescued Tamil Nadu from a defeat. But Ankush Bains had other ideas, who went into T20 mode, smashing 64 off 38 balls to help Himachal register a 9-wicket win. Himachal chased the total down in just 15.3 overs.
