Former Test batsman and well-known TV commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has jumped in into the Ravi Shastri – Sourav Ganguly fracas saying that Anil Kumble “was a better choice” than Ravi Shastri as head coach of Indian cricket team. Manjrekar reacted to Shastri’s disappointment on Twitter saying that the latter is miffed with the rejection.

Ravi Shastri, who had previously spent 18-month run with the Indian team as its director, has been quite vocal about his feelings after losing out to Kumble in the head coach race. Shastri was the front runner to secure the head coach’s job but the tables turned in the opposite way for him once Anil Kumble entered the fray.

Ganguly, who was one of the dominant members of the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee that interviewed candidates for the top job, played a big role in Kumble’s appointment. The former captain also secured the support of VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar, the other members of the advisory panel.

Manjrekar, Shastri’s former teammate and a co-commentator in recent times, has mocked at Shastri’s angst at Ganguly. “More than Ganguly, Ravi is miffed with the rejection. It’s a new experience for him,” Manjrekar tweeted.

Manjrekar’s opinion comes just around the same time Ganguly reacted to Shastri’s attack. “If Ravi thinks because of me that he is not the coach of Team India, then he is living in a fool’s world. Ravi has made a personal attack which was not expected and is very saddening,” Ganguly had said of Ravi Shastri’s allegation on him.

The CAB president also added that he was “surprised and saddened” at the personal attack and said that it was previously decided that he will attend the CAB working committee meeting on that day.

“I am extremely surprised and saddened on the comments of Ravi Shastri. It was already previously decided that I will attend the CAB working committee meeting on the day of these coach elections.”
