Two of the strongest teams this season, Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans, will cross swords in Match 24 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Both teams have three wins in four games and it will be interesting to see how this contest pans out. It will be a battle between the Rajasthan batters and the Gujarat bowlers, and the winner will advance atop the points table.

Led by Hardik Pandya, GT have made best use of their resources. While their bowling strength is second to none, there are some loopholes in the batting department which were exposed in the last game against SRH. A top-order failure against SRH meant GT’s winning streak was broken as the Orange Army defeated them by eight wickets.

However, that contest also went right down to the wire and GT are still looking formidable on paper. While Shubman Gill has been making his bat talk, Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson, and Rashid Khan form a daunting trio in the bowling department. Moreover, skipper Hardik has been leading the team from the front, contributing in all three departments.

The top order does look pretty fragile with Matthew Wade not scoring runs and number-three batter Sai Sudharsan being new to the IPL. However, the lower order has done the cover-up work with dashers like Hardik, David Miller, and Rahul Tewatia coming to the party.

Speaking of Rajasthan Royals, they are arguably the most-balanced team this season. While Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson, and Shimron Hetmyer are gracing the batting department, Trent Boult, Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal are joining forces to form a potent bowling attack. Fortunately for RR, all these players have performed to their potential this season and GT must be aware of the same.

RR’s only defeat this season was recorded against Royal Challengers Bangalore in a close encounter. However, they bounced back and defeated Lucknow Super Giants by three runs in their last fixture. While there are hardly any loopholes in the side, RR’s top-order batters struggled against the new ball in the last game. Hence, the likes of Mohammed Shami and Lockie Ferguson would be licking their lips to take the field.

Pitch and conditions

The track at the DY Patil Stadium has been ideal for batting so far and hence, bowlers of both camps must buckle up. In the last night’s game, CSK slammed 216/4 while batting first, the highest team score of the season. While RCB couldn’t chase down the total, they still managed 193/9 which tells a lot about the surface. Four of the seven games at this venue have gone to the chasers. As the threat of dew can’t be overseen, the toss-winning skipper must elect to bowl first.

Playing combinations for RR vs GT

Rajasthan Royals

RR don’t have many reasons to tinker with their winning combination. Devdutt Padikkal, who scored a run-a-ball 29 in the last game, will keep Yashasvi Jaiswal on the benches. As debutant pacer Kuldeep Sen performed well in the last game, Navdeep Saini and Varun Aaron won’t take the field in this fixture at least.

Predicted XI: Jos Buttler, Devdutt Padikkal, Sanju Samson (c & wk), Rassie van der Dussen, Shimron Hetmyer, Riyan Parag, Kuldeep Sen, Ravichandran Ashwin, Trent Boult, Prasidh Krishna, Yuzvendra Chahal

Gujarat Titans

Speaking of Gujarat Titans, they can and they must alter their playing XI. Matthew Wade hasn’t fired so far and GT have Rahmanullah Gurbaz warming the benches. The Aussie wicketkeeper, however, is likely to get another chance as he scored a run-a-ball 19 in the last game. Meanwhile, GT can include R Sai Kishore at the expense of Darshan Nalkande, who had a tough time containing runs.

Predicted XI: Matthew Wade (wk), Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, Hardik Pandya (c), David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Abhinav Manohar, Rashid Khan, Lockie Ferguson, Mohammed Shami, R Sai Kishore
