South Africa will be locking horns against England in the 13th match of the Women’s World Cup 2022 at the Bay Oval in Mount Manguanai. The Proteas side has won both of their close encounters so far against Bangladesh and Pakistan, and they will possess a stiff challenge against the defending champions. For England, it hasn’t been the best of starts with two losses in as many games and they will have to get their campaign back on track soon with a win over South Africa. Every game from here on is going to be crucial for both teams for making it to the semi-finals of the tournament.

Head to Head record:

England has dominated the meetings against South Africa so far in both women’s ODIs and in World Cups. In 38 games so far, England women have won 29 games and has lost just the eight games against South African women in ODIs with one game having no result. In women’s World Cup fixtures, South Africa has managed just one win against England and has lost five games so far.

Top Performers:

South Africa opener Lizelle Lee has the most ODI runs among the current group of cricketers as far as ODIs between these two sides are concerned. The 29-year-old has hit 445 runs in eight games at an average of 63.57 and she has scored one century and four half-centuries already in the meeting between the two sides. Meanwhile, England’s Anya Shrubsole has the most wickets in the meetings between the two sides as she has picked up 19 wickets in 10 games at an average of 19.78 with one five-wicket haul already.

Last World Cup meeting:

Interestingly, these two teams met in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 twice, first in the round-robin fixtures and then in the semi-finals as well. South Africa won the toss and opted to bat in the semi-finals, at the County Ground in Bristol. The hosts England were off to a good start as they picked up Lizelle Lee and Trisha Chetty with just 48 runs on the board. Mignon du Preez (76*) and Laura Wolvaardt (66) got an excellent partnership going while contributions from Dane van Niekerk (27) and Sune Luus (21) took South Africa to a decent total of 218 for the loss of 6 wickets in 50 overs.

In reply, the England openers took on the bowling straight away, however, both the openers were dismissed with just 61 on the board in the 13th over mark. Sarah Taylor’s half-century alongside Heather Knight’s 30 looked like taking the game away from South Africa, while a run-out brought them back into the game. Natalie Sciver and Katherine Brunt couldn’t last long either. However, the likes of Fran Wilson and Jenny Gunn stitched an important partnership towards the end as England won the game with two balls to spare and two wickets in hand.
