As India celebrates its 72nd Independence Day, Twitter is abuzz with tweets acknowledging the country’s proud battle for independence, and how far it has come since then. Like each year on this day, several cricketers have taken to the micro-blogging site to wish the country on its independence anniversary, and one among them is a cricketer from the other side of the Wagah Border – Shahid Afridi.

Afridi, who was recently in the news for paying due respect to the Indian flag while posing for a picture with a fan in Switzerland, posted a special tweet on Indian Independence Day. While addressing India as neighbours, the ‘boom boom’ man hoped that India and Pakistan nip their rivalries in the bud soon.

“Happy Independence Day to #India, our neighbors across the border. I sincerely hope that from this year onwards, both Pakistan and India work towards resolving their issues for a better, peaceful and prosperous region where India Pak cricket matches can also be frequently held,” the all-rounder wrote.

No bilateral series between India and Pakistan

It has been years now that the fans have been deprived of contests between the arch-rivals outside of multilateral events like the ICC World Cups and the Asia Cup. The Indian government doesn’t allow any other bilateral series with Pakistan due to the cross-border turmoil that is prevalent even today. Until that ceases to end, fans will have to contend themselves with one in a blue moon encounter between the teams.

The two will face each other in the Asia Cup this year, and then the World Cup next year in England. Afridi was a popular cricketer from his generation owing to the unflinching approach he employed on the cricket pitch. He made his last international appearance for the World XI in their match against the Windies at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground.
