Akhtar, Tendulkar battled in the famous 2003 World Cup clash on this day

Interestingly enough, on March 1, Shoaib Akhtar and the legendary former India batter Sachin Tendulkar faced off in the iconic 2003 World Cup clash. This memorable encounter took place in the Pool-A fixture between India and Pakistan at the Super Sport Park in Centurion. India had already secured their spot in the Super Sixes, while Pakistan needed a victory to advance to the knockout stage.

Opener Saeed Anwar smashed a stunning century as Pakistan posted a challenging total of 273/7 in their allotted 50 overs. However, the stage was set for an extraordinary display of batting prowess by Tendulkar. In a display of sheer dominance, Tendulkar launched a ferocious assault on the Pakistani bowling attack right from the start. Particularly, he hit a maximum and two boundaries off the final three balls of Akhtar's opening over.

The onslaught persisted throughout Tendulkar's innings as he amassed 98 runs from just 75 deliveries. However, Akhtar managed to find some solace in his fifth over by dismissing the Master Blaster, who fell agonizingly short of his century by just two runs, providing Pakistan with a glimmer of hope. However, it proved to be insufficient as the Men in Blue comfortably secured victory by six wickets with 26 balls remaining. Akhtar concluded his spell with figures of 1/72 in his allocated ten overs, a commendable effort amidst the relentless assault, and unfortunately, Pakistan were eliminated from the marquee event.
