India came in for a shock ahead of the five-match Test series against England starting on August 1 as reports said the thumb surgery that one of their prime bowlers – Jasprit Bumrah – was not successful.

According to a BCCI official who spoke to Deccan Chronicle, the operation on Bumrah’s left-hand thumb which suffered a fracture during India’s tour of Ireland before they reached England, fell short of success.

The 24-year-old Gujarat pacer missed the T20I and ODI series ahead of the Test series because of the injury sustained during the first T20I versus Ireland in Malahide. He was included in the Indian squad for the first three Test matches but was available for selection only from the second Test beginning at the Lord’s on August 9.

The latest report now raises a question mark over Bumrah’s availability for the entire Test series. Though the BCCI official said that Bumrah could still make it since the injury is on his non-bowling hand, it is certainly not a clear signal for him.

An emergency might see Bumrah feature in Tests

“I guess technically he is out for 3-4 weeks but being a bowler and injury in his non-bowling hand, the team management might gamble if there is an emergency or they can make him play with the bandages,” the official was quoted as saying.

Bumrah made his Test debut against South Africa in the away series played earlier this year and has already grabbed a five-for in the three matches that he has played. He has been a more prominent name in India’s bowling line-up in the ODIs and T20Is.

India has an adequate pace bowling reserve bench in this tour of England with the likes of Shardul Thakur backing up the battery spearheaded by Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Hardik Pandya.

Another experienced pacer in Bhuvneshwar Kumar has also been ruled out of the first three Test matches because of injury.
