Virat Kohli is unarguably one of the most popular cricketers on the globe at the moment. The Indian skipper’s fan following is quite evident from the crowd reception and attention that he receives on or off the field. The 31-year-old has established himself as a top-rated player in all formats of the game. Cricket fans, irrespective of the venue, turn out in huge numbers just to get a glimpse of the Indian skipper. However, the incidents of pitch invasions have escalated in recent times.

On Day 3 in the first Test match against Bangladesh in Indore, a passionate fan of Virat Kohli grabbed the headlines by breaching the security during the match. The fan jumped a fence during the drinks break and rushed on to the playing field.

The fan had ‘VK’ painted on his back along with the number 18. He charged towards the Indian captain to touch his feet before the ground personnel caught up with him. Kohli put his arm around the fan’s neck while requesting the security personnel to be gentle with the pitch invader.

Virat Kohli’s gesture won many hearts as the social media was flooded with reactions to the incident. However, veteran Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar recently raised concerns about the security of players during the SA series. Gavaskar was commentating during the occurrence of the incident during the recently concluded series.

“These incidents happen because security people are not watching the crowd but are watching the match. This has been the perennial problem in India. The security is not there to watch the match for free. They are there to stop such interruptions from happening,” Gavaskar had said from the commentary box.
