Australia Women, the no.1 ranked side in the ICC T20I rankings, will return to action in the format after around half a year of inactivity in the circuit, as they last faced the same opposition, New Zealand, in their backyard in September 2020 – their only assignment ever since the Women’s World Cup in March 2020. Unlike their counterparts, New Zealand Women placed fourth in the rankings, have gotten a chance to be in action as they were against England Women in the home series recently that they lost 0-3.

The home team, New Zealand, has not been at the best of their T20I game and has undergone six defeats in their last seven T20I encounters. Another glaring concern for them going into the current series will be the form of their skipper Sophie Devine, who recorded three single-digit scores in the recent series against England. New Zealand will be missing the services of their former skipper and batting mainstay Suzie Bates, who is yet to regain fitness.

However, they will be welcoming speedster Lea Tahuhu, who is returning after a hamstring injury, whereas both Brooke Halliday and Fran Jonas, who made their debuts in the ODI series against England have secured a spot in the T20I squad for the three-match series.

For Australia, on the front of personnel, pacer Tayla Vlaeminck will be making a return from an injury that kept her away from the action for the entire T20 World Cup, whereas all-rounder Ellyse Perry also marks her return to international cricket after recovering from a severe hamstring injury. All-rounder Annabel Sutherland, however, has been ruled out owing to a thigh injury and off-spinner Molly Strano has been named her replacement. Australia has included two uncapped pacers Darcie Brown and Hannah Darlington, with an eye on the future.

Pitch and conditions

The record of chasing and defending at Seddon Park does not give out a clear winner, with 6 times the games going in favor of teams batting first as opposed to 5 times in favor of teams batting second. Known for its small-sized grounds, the boundaries at Hamilton are slightly bigger than other venues in the nation, with an average first innings score in T20Is being 176. Partial showers are expected.
