WI vs BAN: Bangladesh players fall sick after terrible sea voyage from St. Lucia to Dominica

The Bangladesh cricket team had a terrible few hours in the West Indies before their first T20I match against the hosts in Dominica. The side took an almost five-hour voyage through the sea from Saint Lucia to the location (about 180 kilometers). However, because the majority of Bangladeshi players had never traveled by ferry before, by the time their team arrived in Dominica, most of the players fell ill.

As soon as the ferry crossed the halfway point in the water, the waves erupted and as it was a ferry, even waves that were six to seven feet high were enough to cause it to swing uncontrollably. One by one, cricketers started to get seasick as a consequence. Shoriful Islam and Nafees Iqbal were two of the players who were most severely impacted.

A report in the Bangladesh newspaper Prothom Alo brought the terrible incident to the limelight, as it also said that Shorfiul vomited repeatedly throughout the trip and that the host team themselves had never been to another island on a ship for an international game.

“We are the ones who can fall sick and die here, us, nothing will happen to them,” a Bangladesh cricketer was quoted by the mentioned media house. Another cricketer said: “I have toured many countries, this is the first time I am experiencing something like this. None of us are used to this. Forget about playing, what will happen if one of us gets seriously ill on the ferry. This is the worst tour of my life.”

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh squad is prepared for Saturday’s opening T20I of a three-match series against West Indies at the Windsor Park, Dominica. After losing the Test series by 2-0, the visiting side will look to give a strong reply to West Indies, whereas the Islanders would eye at capitalizing on their winning momentum from the Test series.
