Aggression, fearlessness and leadership are desirable qualities from most modern day batsmen. However, when Brendon McCullum’s name is thrown up, those words are a bitter understatement to a man who is widely regarded as a phenomenon in New Zealand cricket. When McCullum cemented his place in the side all those years ago, New Zealand cricket was nothing close to the dominant force they are today. Un-surprisingly, McCullum was never dropped from the New Zealand side since 2004. His hard hitting abilities and ability to decimate bowling attacks was nothing short of extraordinary. On the contrary, his selection was entirely due to the presence of a few mellow batsmen in the side at the time.

In a career that spanned almost a dozen years, McCullum has reinforced the term ‘fearless batting’. Most will remember his exploits in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 where he led a young and energetic Kiwi side. Apart from the fact that they reached the final, McCullum ensured that he always laid the early foundation for his side to build the innings upon. Despite the Kiwis not winning the final, he became the first Kiwi skipper to lead his side to the final of an ICC tournament.

Brendon McCullum called it quits from international cricket following the second against Australia Test at Christchurch. In spite of losing the Trans-Tasman trophy, McCullum gave all the Christchurch faithful present something to cheer with a magnificently compiled century in the first innings. Although most say that his retirement is rather premature, McCullum has left a lasting legacy on the game of cricket as well as the fans.
