The left-arm fast bowler Reece Topley made his T20I debut way back in 2015. But, until 2021, he has only six T20I matches for his national team. Regular injuries and a couple of inconsistent domestic seasons meant that he didn’t feature in a lot of matches. But, he received a call-up for the series against India.

At the time, it seemed like a good pick. Apart from Sam Curran, England doesn’t have any other left-arm pacer. In T20 cricket, it is always a good option to have a left-arm seamer in play which allows the bowling unit to pose some different questions to the batsmen. However, as the series progressed, Curran was the only preferred choice to operate as the lefty.

This is also because Curran gives an option of added batting prowess towards the death overs. His experience of playing in the IPL also gives him an edge over Topley to make it to the England squad for the World Cup. By the time, the team goes to the World Cup, it is unlikely that Topley will be in recurring.
