India’s 18-man squad for South Africa Tests has already been announced and it came as a little surprise to the fans when out of form Ajinkya Rahane was backed for the series. It is known to all that Rahane has been struggling big time and his performances of late have already raised many eyebrows. In the same light of events, former chief selector MSK Prasad backed Rahane’s selection for the upcoming SA tour.

Prasad added that experienced players play a key role in the overseas tour and that Rahane has fine records in foreign tours. However, the Mumbai batter’s dip in form has put all the selectors in trouble where Prasad proposed that selectors can look for specific players for away and home series.

“At the end of the day, it should be a mix of juniors and seniors. Even in 2013, he (Rahane) did well. Usually, Rahane performs well in overseas conditions but his record at home hasn’t been great. Taking these things into consideration, the selectors can look into players for home conditions and players for away conditions. Usually, Rahane is one guy who does really well in away conditions. Selectors are a bit puzzled because of his form. Whether they are going to look forward or back his experience is going to be their judgment,” said Prasad while speaking to India Today.

It is good to have a healthy headache for the selectors: Prasad

It has to be noted that Rahane has more than 3000 runs to his credit on away tours while averaging over 40 which is impressive against his home average of 35. However, Prasad has added that selectors have got a sweet headache but will need to chalk out plans for struggling senior batters.

“First of all, it is good to have a healthy headache for the selectors. And secondly, you need to have a system in place. How many opportunities would you be giving to a senior cricketer, when do you want to induct a youngster? How many youngsters are on a tour? These are the things you should take into consideration, there should be a good balance,” he added.
