Yet another day that was even stevens spiced up the first Ashes Test match at the Gabba as the home side made 165/4 in reply to England’s total of 302. The visitors started off well on the 2nd day with the help of a partnership between Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali.

However, they lost the remaining six wickets in a space of 56 runs only to be bowled out for 302. England bowlers started off well and reduced Australia to 76/4 before captain Steven Smith (64*) rescued his side along with Steven Smith (44*).

Here are the stats and numbers from another even day in the Brisbane Test:

3 – Mark Stoneman, James Vince and Dawid Malan scored fifties in their first ever Ashes Test match. This is the first instance when three Ashes debutants scored fifty and more in the same innings.


10 – Cameron Bancroft is David Warner‘s 10th opening partner in Test cricket. Among Australian openers, only Alick Bannerman (12) and Arthur Morris (12) had more opening partners in this format.


19 – Number of Test series’ Steven Smith has featured in his career so far. He scored at least one fifty-plus score in all the 19 series’. His 58 in the previous Test series in Bangladesh was his 2nd lowest best score.


26 – Warner’s 26 is his lowest score in the first Test innings he has batted in a home season since 2012/13. In 2014/15 and 2015/16, he scored 145 and 163 in the first innings of a home Test season and 97 in 2016/17. He scored 49, four runs and three runs respectively in the first Test innings of 2013/14, 2012/13 and 2011/12 home seasons.


37 – Matches Mitchell Starc needed to complete 150 wickets in Test cricket. He is the joint 3rd fastest left-arm pacer to reach 150 Test wickets. Mitchell Johnson and Bill Johnston took 34 and 35 Tests respectively while Alan Davidson also took 37 Tests for the milestone. All these four players are from Australia.


64* – Nine Australians made their Ashes captaincy debut including Steven Smith in the last 40 years but his 64* is the 2nd highest in their maiden innings as a skipper among these nine. Only Steve Waugh (105 in 2001 at Birmingham) scored more than Smith so far.


67.2 – Number of overs Josh Hazlewood bowled in Test cricket without taking a wicket before scalping Stuart Broad. His previous Test wicket was Murali Vijay in Dharamsala in March.


302 – England’s total of 302 is their 3rd 300+ first innings total at the Gabba while batting first. They previously posted 456 in 1986 and 358 in 1936. The English side ended up defeating the Aussies on both the occasions.
