One of the major reasons for Australia’s choke at Leeds where they couldn’t break the 10th wicket stand was the lack of a reliable and handy fifth bowler in the playing XI. The likes of Marnus Labuschagne or Travis Head were not effective in sustaining pressure or stopping the run flow.

Also, looking at the next game where Smith will be back to boost the batting line-up, it makes strategic sense to bring in the all-rounder Mitchell Marsh in place of Matthew Wade. Wade had multiple failures at Leeds and considering he is a backup wicketkeeper, his fielding pales in comparison to the likes of Travis Head.

Mitch Marsh is yet to completely prove his potential in the Test match arena. He has hit 1215 runs in 31 games at a modest average of 25.1 and has taken 35 wickets at 43.9. These stats may not inspire too much confidence but being the only all-rounder in the squad, his role would be to hold one end up when he bowls and add crucial 30-40 runs down the order when he bats.

It makes strategic sense to include him for the next game in place of a struggling Matthew Wade. That would bolster the balance of the team and give more options for Tim Paine, as he clearly missed a fifth bowler who could reduce the workload of the four main bowlers at Leeds.
