Standing in his maiden Test match as captain, Pat Cummins was the star on Day 1 of the first Ashes Test on a gloomy and overcast day at the Gabba as he took five wicket-haul with England getting all out for just 147 runs. Mitchell Starc started the innings with a bang as he bowled Rory Burns on the very first bowl of the match, the latter’s sixth duck this year. England, apart from Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler’s thirties, couldn’t do much and got bundled out in 50.1 overs before the rain started to pour down.

After losing his opening partner, Haseeb Hameed did score 25 runs off 75 balls but he eventually became new skipper Pat Cummins’s first of five victims. After a top-order collapse, Jos Buttler and Ollie Pope joined hands to stitch 52 runs stand but Mitchell Starc then came in and took his second wicket of the day in form of Jos Buttler. Ollie Pope got out to all-rounder Cameron Green for 35 runs as Cummins then introduced himself to finish off the proceedings with a five-for. Cummins became the tenth captain overall and fifth Australian to take five wicket-haul in the Ashes.

With 50.1 overs done, the heavens opened up and it started to pelt down forcing the abandonment of further day’s play. Australia will surely be the happiest side on day one with captain Cummins shining with the ball and they would be looking to get to a big first-innings score to take complete control of the match. England minus Stuart Broad and James Anderson will be hoping for some early wickets and put pressure on the Australian middle-order on Day 2 to stay alive in the contest.
