The chief physician of the Bangladesh team, Debashish Chowdhury, has confirmed that Nayeem Hasan will not be a part of the team in the second Test against Sri Lanka as the young off-spinner has sustained a finger injury in the first Test.

Chowdhury also cleared the clouds on Nayeem’s appearance in the Test series against West Indies and said that the possibilities of his availability are very thin. He considered that Hasan will need three to four weeks to get out and recover from this injury.

“Nayeem is certainly ruled out from the second test against visitors as he fractured his finger. He will need at least three to four weeks to recover and taking that into consideration it looks he is unlikely to make it into the squad of Test team against West Indies,” he said in a statement.

However, Chowdhury is hopeful that Mehedy Hasan, who missed the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka due to a finger injury, can be seen as a choice by Bangladesh management. “We have opened his plaster three to four days back and now he is having his physiotherapy, and we are hoping and confident that he will be available during the West Indies tour,” Chowdhury added in his statement.

In the first Test against Sri Lanka, Nayeem bowled exceptionally well in the first innings as he scalped six wickets, conceding only 105 runs in 30 overs with an impressive economy rate of 3.50 runs per over. Therefore, his exclusion would be a setback for Bangladesh on their West Indies tour.

It would not be an easy task for Mehedy Hasan to get back into the rhythm after a long break from the field as he may need time to get familiar with the conditions. The next Test against Sri Lanka is also going to be a crucial one for the hosts.
