After having lost the first T20I of the three match series against England, the Indian team were desperate to stay alive in the series when the action moved to Nagpur. However, it was a poor batting display from the hosts as they could only muster 144 runs on the board. This included a fine 71 from KL Rahul and a handy contribution of 30 from Manish Pandey.

It was owing to these two batsmen that the hosts managed to put a decent total on the board. In the run chase, Ashish Nehra accounted for the dismissal of both the openers. However, Joe Root and Ben Stokes (both scoring 38 each) rallied along to steer England closer to a series win. England needed 41 off the last five overs with 7 wickets in hand, 32 off the last 4 with still 7 wickets in hand, and eventually just 8 off the final over with six wickets in hand.

Despite all odds, team India managed to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Root and Jos Buttler in the final over and held his nerves to concede just 2 runs to help the hosts register a narrow 5 run win. India leveled the series 1-1 and eventually won the final T20I at Bengaluru to seal the series 2-1.
