Cricket Australia created a Guinness World Record on December 2, by conducting a cricket lesson for 500 school kids at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). The session was led by Australian Head Coach Darren Lehmann and pace bowler Peter Siddle as they were assisted by off-spinner Nathan Lyon, Peter Nevill, Hilton Cartwright, Mitchell March, Meg Lanning and a mascot from each of the eight Big Bash League teams.
Ahead of the first One-Day International against New Zealand at the SCG on 4 December, CA organized for more than 500 young cricketers to be guided by some of the biggest names in Australian cricket at the moment as an attempt to create a new Guinness World Records for the largest cricket lesson.
The participating kids batted, bowled, and fielded during the lesson that lasted half an hour to create history. “It was a lot of fun out on the SCG today leading this giant MILO in2CRICKET lesson and it was certainly the most cricketers I’ve ever coached at one time,” said Darren Lehmann. “To help set a new world record is great but it was just as exciting to see so many kids getting involved in our great sport.”
A Guinness World Record adjudicators was present at the SCG to witness the attempt along with 15 witnesses to have a close look at the proceedings and to determine if it met all the rules around duration, headcount, and participation. The previous record was of 250 participants taking a 30 minutes cricket lesson, with all the kids simultaneously doing the same activity.
The General Manager Dairy for Nestlé Australia, Mark Mackaness said MILO has been committed to encourage grassroots cricket and has promoted active lives and healthy lifestyle. “MILO has been part of the cricket journey for millions of kids around Australia since 1993 and we are excited to be part of this Guinness World Record attempt. We hope this will encourage even more kids to get involved in the game and register for their local MILO in2CRICKET club.” He said.
