Former Australian captain Ian Chappell has warned England for picking both James Anderson and Stuart Broad in the squad away from home. Anderson has picked up 667 Test wickets while Broad has picked up 566 during their stint with the national side. The duo are the two most successful wicket takers in the history of Test cricket. With the two players ageing and running the final lap of their professional careers, Chappell believes it would be a ‘mistake’ to pick them away from home.
Chappell in his latest column explained his stance and dropped numerous interesting statements. The Australian legend is an admirer of Ben Stokes’ leadership but also thinks it will be interesting to see how the side fares outside home advantage.
Ian Chappell warns England for including the duo
The credibility of the two most successful seamers in the history of test cricket Tas been questioned by Chappell in his latest column. The pace bowling duo have had lack of opportunities following their string of dismal performances.
“Now England have the right captain (Ben Stokes) in place, it becomes a matter of choosing the best combination to win in the prevailing conditions. It’s not surprising that their results have greatly improved following their disastrous tour of Australia (Ashes)," Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNcricinfo.
“England were certainly unlucky in Australia because they were deprived of some first-choice fast bowlers through injury. However, it’s patently clear that selecting the ageing Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad in the same team anywhere but in England is a mistake."
“It’s acceptable, but not ideal, to select a right-arm seam attack in England because it can suit the pitch and surrounding conditions. However, that doesn’t work on Australia’s bouncy pitches, where you need variety and the genuine pace of a Jofra Archer and a Mark Wood to have a chance of victory," he reiterated.
Anderson and Broad were dropped from the tour to West Indies after the 0-4 whitewash in the Ashes. However, with the new management led by Brendon McCullum as the coach and Stokes as the skipper, the ageing warhorses were added back in the squad.
