The Indian Premier League (IPL) mini-auction is set to take place on December 23, Friday in Kochi. Gujarat Titans are the reigning champions as they beat former IPL winner Rajasthan Royals (2008) to clinch the coveted title. All franchises have already begun ideating plans and must have noted down specific players to target at the auction in order to bolster their squads ahead of the new season.

Speaking about the auction, as many as 991 players had registered for the process initially, of which only 405 will go under the hammer. A total of 131 bowlers, 61 batters, 155 all-rounders, and 58 wickets keepers will be up for grabs in the event on Friday.

The player auction will be held at Grand Hyatt Hotel in Kochi and begin at 2:30 PM IST on Friday. The grand total purse of all franchises taking part in the mini-auction is INR 206.50 crore. It includes Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) entering with the maximum purse of INR 42.25 crore and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) with INR 7.05 crore have the least amount available in their purse for the auction.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the addition of an ‘Impact Player’ ahead of the 16th edition. The Impact Player rule will allow a team to name a substitute during an ongoing match. Teams can name four substitute players and can bring in one during the live match in place of any player from the starting eleven.

Franchises will need to carefully assess the players at the auction before intending to acquire their services. The traditional ‘Home and Away’ format is also set to return in the upcoming season as the COVID-19-centric restrictions won't be there.
