Pat Cummins played a crucial role with bat and ball during the Ashes and his captaincy skills were put to test against a dangerous England side. The all-rounder had the chance to be the first Australian captain to win the Ashes series in England since Steve Waugh in 2001 but eventually had to settle for a 2-2 draw after losing two out of the last three Tests. However, he would nOt be too disappointed after his team managed to retain the coveted urn.

In an unfortunate turn of events, the 30-year-old Aussie stalwart suffered an injury on his left wrist on the first day of the fifth Test in London while fielding. His left arm was heavily strapped from Day 2 onwards and he did not look at ease, especially while batting.

"I landed on my wrist on day one in the field going for a run-out. It's pretty sore. We'll get it assessed over the next few days and work out if anything needs to happen," Cummins was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Cummins will have at least three weeks to assess the situation and recover from the injury. He could have a longer window if he is rested for Australia's three-match T20I series against South Africa, which begins on August 30. A five-match ODI series will follow the T20Is, starting from September 7.

Pat Cummins' performance in Ashes 2023

The Aussie captain Cummins fulfilled his duties as an all-rounder during the Ashes and finished with impressive returns. With the bat, Cummins played nine innings and scored 162 runs at an average of 23.14, including a match-winning unbeaten 44 in the fourth innings of the first Test in Birmingham that helped the tourists emerge victorious by two wickets.

Cummins had a decent time with the ball as well, picking 18 wickets to finish fourth on the list of highest wicket-takers in the five-match series. His average (37.72), however, was on the higher side. Australia will hope that the issue with hsi wrist resolves soon as they have a World Cup to play in October-November.
