After Hardik Pandya decided to join Mumbai Indians for IPL 2024, Shubman Gill was appointed as the new captain of the Gujarat Titans. The youngster has some experience in captaincy at the domestic and age-group level but has not led a team in the senior division. However, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson believes in his abilities and stated that he is ready to support and help, whenever Gill needs him in the middle.

Notably, Gujarat signed the Williamson ahead of IPL 2023 but the cricketer was ruled out with a knee injury. While trying to save a six near the boundary ropes, Williamson jumped but didn’t land well, which hurt his right knee. After which, the batter underwent surgery and made his return during the ODI World Cup in October.

Speaking about his return to Gujarat, Williamson hilariously mentioned that he would ask Gill not to field him in the same position and added, that the 24-year-old is a gifted cricketer and he loves watching the India international bat.

“That's a very good point. I will try and corner him at some stage,” Williamson said on CricketNext regarding his fielding position.

“Shubman's talent is out of this world. He is such a gifted cricketer and incredible to watch and makes it all look so easy. He is really excited at this opportunity and my role is to support and help whenever he sees best fit,” he added.

Williamson opens up about frustrating IPL 2023

Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra was excited to have Kane Williamson in the squad for IPL 2023. However, he injured himself in the opening game, which ruled him out of the tournament. He called it frustrating and stated that he is eagerly waiting to hit the field for Gujarat again.

“Obviously last season I was there for five minutes. It was frustrating but it has been a great learning curve and a real process in terms of recovery and rehab after the injury. I really enjoyed my brief time here last year. So it's great to be back and looking forward to the season,” Williamson added.
