India and England are set to commence their first encounter in the five-match Test series at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, starting on January 25. In a recent development, England have unveiled their starting XI for the series opener. The team features three specialist spinners and a lone seamer, with Lancashire's Tom Hartley slated to make his Test debut.

Included in the side are Ollie Pope, Ben Foakes, Rehan Ahmed, and Jack Leach, all absent from England's last Test against Australia at The Oval last summer. Left-arm spinner Hartley is poised to make his Test debut, adding an exciting dimension to England's bowling arsenal. The omission of veteran fast-bowler James Anderson from the playing eleven has raised eyebrows, emphasizing England's bold move towards spin dominance in the subcontinent conditions.

England's lineup boasts four spinners including Joe Root, showcasing their intent to exploit the spin-friendly pitches in India. Hartley, alongside left-arm spinner Jack Leach, leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, and part-time off-spinner Joe Root, forms a formidable spin quartet. The decision to include Hartley, who has impressed in first-class cricket for Lancashire, suggests England's belief in his ability to make an impact akin to Axar Patel's role for India in the 2021 series.

Captain Ben Stokes even hinted at the prospect of Root opening the bowling in spin-friendly conditions, underlining England's commitment to utilizing spin as a potent weapon. With Mark Wood as the lone fast-bowling option, England's strategy revolves around the spin trio of Ahmed, Leach, and the debutant Hartley.

The batting order sees the return of wicketkeeper-batter Ben Foakes, absent since the New Zealand tour last February. Jonny Bairstow steps in as the specialist batter at number five, filling the void left by Harry Brook, who withdrew from the tour due to personal reasons.

England face the challenge of breaking a 12-year Test series win drought in India, last achieving victory under Alastair Cook's captaincy. The memories of the 2021 series, where England won the opening Test but succumbed to a 3-1 defeat, add to the stakes.

In contrast, India enter the series on the back of an impressive 16-home Test series unbeaten streak. Captain Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum will also aim to maintain England's unbeaten Test series record under their leadership.

England's Playing XI for first Test:

Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes (C), Ben Foakes, Rehan Ahmed, Tom Hartley, Mark Wood, and Jack Leach.
