A solid half-century from Kyle Mayers followed by a terrific bowling display from the duo of Marcus Stoinis and Avesh Khan saw Lucknow Super Giants register their first IPL win over Rajasthan Royals by a margin of 10 runs in match number 26 of Indian Premier League 2023 at Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

The coin spun in favour of the hosts as they decided to field first. KL Rahul and Kyle Mayers gave the visitors a positive start on a pitch that was very difficult to bat on, adding 82 runs for the first wicket, of which, Rahul scored 39. Just when the partnership had started to look dangerous, Jason Holder gave RR the first breakthrough by tempting Rahul with a slower delivery.

The collapse started after the fall of the first wicket, as LSG lost four wickets in a span of four overs. Kyle Mayers registered his third fifty before getting dismissed for 51. Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran led the recovery as the duo added 45 runs for the fifth wicket to help Lucknow Super Giants post a competitive total of 154/7 in 20 overs. Nicholas Pooran smashed 29 runs from 20 balls which included three boundaries. For RR, Ravichandran Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers for his spell of 2/23 in four overs.

Chasing 155, Yashasvi Jaiswal went berserk against the LSG bowlers as he smashed four fours and two sixes in his action-filled innings. The duo of Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal added 87 runs for the first wicket. Marcus Stoinis drew the first blood as he dismissed Jaiswal for a 35-ball 44. In the 13th over, a terrible mix-up cost RR the dear wicket of Sanju Samson who almost sacrificed it to keep Buttler alive.

Soon, Avesh Khan joined hands with Stoinis as the duo accounted for Jos Buttler and Shimron Hetmyer’s wickets in the course of two overs, leaving RR in trouble at 104/4 after 15.1 overs. Devdutt Padikkal and Riyan Parag led the fightback with good cameos. With 19 runs to get in the last over, Avesh Khan held his nerve and bowled beautifully to help LSG register their first IPL win over RR by a margin of 10 runs.
