The 18th edition of the Asian Games is currently in progress in Jakarta as the Indian contingent is being tipped to give their best performance this time around. As the action continued on the second day of the competition, India’s medal count increased to 5 and Vinesh Phogat hogged the limelight as she won the second gold medal for the country in the 50 kg category. She was injured very badly during the Rio Olympics in 2016 and stunningly won the medal now on a comeback.

She defeated Japan’s Yuki Irie in Women’s Freestyle 50 kg gold medal match to become the first female gold winner at the Asian Games this year. She completely dominated the contest and won it by 6-2 after taking a 4-0 lead initially in the first round. As far as her semi-final clash was concerned, Vinesh hardly broke a sweat to win against Uzbekistan’s Daulatbike Yakshimuratova.

Cricketing fraternity delighted

The Indian fans have kept their eyes on the proceedings in Jakarta and are loving every bit of the performance from their athletes. When Vinesh Phogat was about to win the gold, the whole country was waiting for the magical moment and as soon as the referee blew the whistle to mark an end of the game, she was trending on Twitter. Congratulatory messages poured for her and the nation was absolutely proud of her achievement.

The fact that she had missed a possible medal at Olympics a couple of years ago makes this success even more special and she would be itching to win it in the next edition. The Indian cricketing legends, despite the cricket team playing well in England at Trent Bridge, were keen to follow the proceedings and erupted as soon as the gold medal was confirmed for India.

On the opening day of Asian Games, Bajrang Punia grabbed the honours by winning the first yellow metal of the event for India.
