One of the most beautiful chapters in the history of South Africa cricket came to an end on Thursday when Hashim Amla announced his retirement from international cricket. The big decision brought an end to a glorious career that spanned well over a decade. Amla bowed out of international cricket as one of the best batsmen from South Africa and one of the all-time greats in international cricket.

While the last few months were not ideal for Amla, it does not undermine his run-laden career. In a career spanning 349 international games, Amla aggregated 18,672 runs including 55 centuries and 88 fifties. The right-handed batsman has made the only triple hundred by a South African in Test cricket. His record in ODIs is also equally impressive.

Amla remains the quickest batsman in the world to reach the landmarks of 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000 and 7000 ODI runs. He finishes his ODI career with 8,113 runs at an average of over 49. His 27 ODI tons remain the most from a South African batsman.

Amla was tipped for bigger things in international cricket right from the time he led South Africa at the Under-19 World Cup of 2002. He took over the captaincy of Nashua Dolphins at an early age of 21 and made a mark straightaway. Hashim Amla finally made his Test debut during the tour of India in 2004-05 and soon established himself as the batting mainstay of the team. He was named South Africa Cricketer of the Year in 2010 and again in 2013.

“Firstly, all glory and thanks to the Almighty for granting me this Proteas journey which has been nothing but a joy and privilege,” Hashim Amla said in a statement. “I learnt many lessons during this incredible ride, made many friends and most importantly shared in the love of a brotherhood called Protea Fire.

“I would like to thank my parents for their prayers, love and support, it is their shadow over me that enabled me to play for years under the Protea sun. Also, my family, friends and agent, my teammates and every member of the support staff throughout this incredible journey. A heartfelt thank you to every one of you,” he added as he waved goodbye to the Proteas.
