Australia’s poor run in the ODI format continued as England defeated them in the 2nd ODI by 38 runs to take a 2-0 lead in the 5-match series. Jason Roy’s 108-ball 120 at the top and the stand-in skipper Jos Buttler’s 70-ball 91 helped the hosts to finish strongly on 342/8.

Australia were 110/4 by the 21st over before they survived on the back of Shaun Marsh’s 96-run stand for the 6th wicket with Aston Agar. Marsh anchored the innings with a brilliant 131-run knock. However, Aussies lost their last four wickets for just 12 runs and fell short of the target.

All the stats and numbers that were recorded during England’s win in the high-scoring game:

1England’s innings was the first in 4010 Men’s ODI matches where a team had fifty-plus stands for their first five wickets. England’s innings is only the 4th time in ODI cricket that there were five fifty-plus partnerships.

50+ stands for the first five wickets in an innings was already recorded in Women’s ODI cricket when New Zealand scored 418 in 1997 against Pakistan.

1 – For the first time in 505 International matches between England and Australia where both the team’s keepers were captains. Tim Paine led Australia while Jos Buttler led England in the absence of Eoin Morgan.

8 – A total of eight fifty-plus stands have been recorded in this game which is the joint-most in an ODI. The 2015 ODI between England and New Zealand at The Oval and the 2017 Southampton ODI between England and South Africa also had eight fifty-plus stands.

32 – England now have scored 300+ in ODI cricket in 32 out of the 77 innings they played since the start of 2015. Till the end of 2014, England had only 31 scores of 300+ in this format in 633 innings.

91*Jos Buttler’s unbeaten innings of 91 is the highest individual score by a keeper-captain for England in ODI cricket. He surpassed Alec Stewart’s 88 against Sri Lanka in the 1999 CWC opener. Stewart’s 88 was also the previous highest ODI innings for a keeper-captain in England as well as in Europe.

131 – Shaun Marsh’s century is the 25th individual century for a visiting player against England during an ODI chase but first in a losing cause. All the previous 24 centuries while chasing against England in England were in a winning cause.

342/8 – England’s total of 342/8 in this game is their highest in the ODI format against Australia. Their previous highest ODI total against Aussies was 333/6 in the 2011 Sydney ODI but ended up on the losing side as the hosted chased down the target in the final over with two wickets in hand.

646 – A total of 646 runs were scored in this game which is the 3rd most in an ODI game that did not witness a century stand. The 1995 Sharjah ODI between Sri Lanka and Windies aggregated 662 runs while last year’s Southampton ODI between England aggregated 658 runs. Interestingly, the highest stand in all these three matches was 96.
