England thumped India for the second time in a row and sealed the three-match series famously to stamp their authority even more on their top rank in the ODIs. Eoin Morgan and Joe Root played exceptional knocks to kick the visitors out of the game after the bowlers had tied them down in the first innings. The most satisfying thing for them though would be the fact that they didn’t lose a wicket to the spinners during the chase.

After being put in to bat first, Rohit Sharma struggled against the moving ball and looked completely out of sorts. he eventually got out after playing 18 deliveries for 2 runs. Only Virat Kohli looked at ease on the pitch and played a beautiful inning of 71 runs. Shikhar Dhawan ran himself out once again after getting set and both the wickets were a big setback for Team India.

Kohli’s wicket turned the screws completely as the spinners of England, especially Adil Rashid was brilliant in his execution and ended up picking three wickets in his 10-over spell. MS Dhoni scored 42 runs but it was once again a slow knock courtesy of the wickets which fell at the other end and he got out when the time was actually up the ante. In the end, it was only due to Shardul Thakur’s exploits that the Men in Blue managed to put up a total of 256 runs on the board.

Root-Morgan steer England

Defending 257 was never going to be easy for the visitors and it proved even tougher after Jonny Bairstow scored a flurry of boundaries to get England up and running. The start was crucial for them and the confidence in the change room was on the top. Both Bairstow and Vince fell quickly by the end of the powerplay but they had done their job to give the middle-order a breathing space against the spinners.

Morgan and Root took time to understand the line the wrist-spinners were trying to bowl and milked them for singles. An odd boundary was coming easily and slowly but surely they ensured that their team was winning the decider almost single-handedly. Kohli tried everything he had in his kitty but the duo was determined to take the team home.

Both remained unbeaten by stitching a partnership of 183 runs and won the series for England. The series victory, especially against India must be more satisfying as they were put under the pump several times. No wonder there were more memes on the Indian cricketers today as Twitterati was at its humorous best as usual during the match.
