After the conclusion of the ongoing Test series, an almost different team will wear the English blues to take on MS Dhoni & Co. in the limited-overs leg of the tournament. While the duo of skipper Eoin Morgan and Alex Hales skipped the Bangladesh tour England coach Trevor Bayliss says that both the players will be back in the team for three ODI and T20I series.

He also said that despite opting out of the Bangladesh series there would be no implications on the players as it was an alternative given to them by the ECB. “The decision was said earlier that there would not be any recriminations against them and they are straight back in,” Bayliss said in Mumbai. “We took the opportunity to blood some younger players who did well.

The Eoin Morgan led side had earlier impressed most with their performance in the World T20, 2016 held in India where they ended runners-up to West Indies in the final. This team has played some fearless cricket and has adapted their game perfectly well to meet the demands of the limited-overs format. “We have done pretty well over last 18 months to two years in white ball cricket and the team we have got has been reasonably stable and successful and there is no reason to change.”

Morgan last featured in a T20I against Pakistan back in September at home but the coach isn’t concerned with the lack of match practice and feels his experience will help him set in despite the break. “Normally it is but it does not seem to affect him that much,” Bayliss explained. “He is a reasonably experienced player now. In the shorter versions of the game it can be a bit hit and miss even when you are in form.

“Certainly the shorter versions of the game are his strength. He went through a lean trot with the bat recently but the last few games we have played he has made some runs so it looks like he is back in form. He captains the team very well. He is a very positive captain and that means a lot to the players in the team.”

Hales as well has been in some form in 2016 having scored 743 runs 13 ODIs. He also recorded the highest individual ODI score by an England batsman with his 171 against Pakistan in the same series. Bayliss said: “(He’s got) four hundreds this year and ODI cricket suits him to a tee. He has that bit of extra time to get himself in and when he gets himself in we know the damage he can do from a batting point of view. He has been an integral part of the last couple of seasons in white ball cricket.”

There is a real battle for a spot in the team between Jonny Bairstow and Sam Billings. Given Bairstow’s form in the ongoing Test series which shows how well he has adapted to the Indian conditions might help him edge Billings in the race. Bayliss said: “Bairstow is batting well. Billings and Bairstow at this stage are probably the two spare batters. We think both are two of our better players of spin also. Billings did well with the opportunity he had in Bangladesh and Bairstow has been batting well.

“Probably over the last couple of years due to the strength of the team we have had, he has not had the opportunities he would have liked. He is a good player, we all know that, and we want to keep him involved.”

The focus will move back to ODI cricket for most teams now with the Champions Trophy 2017 not far away. Following the India tour, England will play three ODIs against West Indies. The Brits will also host Ireland and South Africa before the CT 2017 kick starts.

“Everyone wants to win a global tournament,” Bayliss said. “We want to win every tournament. From my point of view I want to see the guys improving and giving them the chance to win. In the end it is up to them how well they actually play on the day.

“I think we are moving in the right direction and I think the team we have got will give themselves the best opportunity to do that. With the group of guys we have got they are all reasonably young and going forward they should keep improving.”
